Kinesio taping
Elastic taping as sensory and mechanical support during movement.
Kinesio Taping is a therapeutic method utilizing specialized elastic cotton tapes with an acrylic adhesive. These tapes are designed to mimic the thickness, weight, and elasticity of human skin (stretching to 130–140% of their original length). Unlike traditional rigid taping, which immobilizes joints, kinesiology tape allows for a full range of motion and provides primarily sensory and mechanical support. The tapes contain no medication; their effect is strictly mechanical and sensory.
Who it is for.
Who it is for
Tape may be used as a short-term adjunct for selected concerns. Evidence depends on the condition and outcome; tape does not replace exercise, appropriate loading, or other necessary care. It is most commonly used for:
- Sports Injuries: overused muscles, strains, and sprains.
- Edema and Hematomas: as support in managing bruising and swelling.
- Posture and movement control: as a sensory cue for shoulder or spine position.
- Feeling of instability or reduced movement control: as an additional sensory cue during movement.
Key benefits
The most realistic goals are sensory and mechanical support; response is individual:
- Sensory and mechanical support: tape can change skin sensation and help the patient perceive joint position or tissue loading.
- Swelling: in some patients, it is used as adjunctive support in managing swelling.
- Proprioceptive response: the sensation of tape may help some patients notice joint position or movement direction.
- Movement support: depending on placement, tape can provide an additional sensory cue during movement.
