Physiotherapy service

Thermotherapy

Superficial heating for muscle relaxation and better circulation.

01 /Service description

Thermotherapy using hot packs is a method of superficial heating that works on the principle of conduction (heat transfer). Our clinic utilizes professional thermal packs (thermopacks) designed to retain and release heat evenly over an extended period. The heat transfers from the pack to the skin and subcutaneous tissues, causing a local rise in temperature. This triggers a physiological response, primarily vasodilation (widening of blood vessels) and changes in local circulation.

02 /Indications & benefits

Who it is for.

Who it is for

Thermotherapy is strictly indicated for chronic conditions and, unlike cryotherapy, is not used for fresh injuries or acute inflammation. It is suitable for:

  • Muscle Tension: chronically tight muscles (e.g., in the neck or lower back) and muscle spasms.
  • Degenerative Conditions: osteoarthritis in non-inflammatory phases (when the joint is not hot or swollen).
  • Pre-treatment Preparation: used as a preliminary step before manual therapy or therapeutic exercise, as heated tissue allows for easier mobilization.
  • Chronic Pain: long-standing back or joint pain.

Key benefits

Based on the physiological effects of heat, the therapy targets:

  • Increased Circulation: heat induces vasodilation and can temporarily increase local blood flow in the treated area.
  • Muscle Relaxation: it decreases skeletal muscle tone and alleviates spasms.
  • Analgesia: heat acts on nerve endings to reduce pain perception (sedative effect).
  • Increased Tissue Elasticity: heated collagen fibers (tendons, ligaments, joint capsules) become more extensible, facilitating a greater range of motion.
03 /Treatment process

How the treatment works.

Patient safety and comfort are paramount to prevent burns.

  • Preparation: the hot pack, heated to a therapeutic temperature, is wrapped in multiple layers of towels or specialized covers.
  • Application: the pack is placed on the affected body part. The patient should feel a pleasant, intense warmth, but never a burning sensation.
  • Relaxation: the patient remains still during the therapy while the heat gradually penetrates the tissue.
  • Duration: the session typically lasts 15 to 20 minutes, which is the optimal timeframe to achieve maximum blood flow without risking tissue damage.
