Magnetotherapy uses low-frequency Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) technology as an adjunct physical modality. Instead of full-body cylinders, our clinic employs localized flat applicators, allowing for targeted application of magnetic fields to a selected area.

PEMF is used in rehabilitation with the aim of influencing biophysical processes in tissue; for selected conditions, we describe it as supportive care rather than a standalone replacement for diagnosis or active rehabilitation.

Who it is for.

Who it is for

As an adjunct modality, magnetotherapy is most commonly used for selected bone, joint, and soft-tissue concerns:

  • Bone healing: only in selected cases and within a medically directed plan after fracture or surgery.
  • Degenerative conditions: for some forms of osteoarthritis as adjunctive symptom support; it is not a replacement for exercise or osteoporosis treatment.
  • Chronic joint conditions: selected situations where the main goal is symptom management.
  • Soft-tissue concerns: in selected cases as a supportive modality following assessment.

Key benefits

Based on the biophysical effects of electromagnetic fields, the therapy targets:

  • Bone tissue: in some protocols, PEMF is used as adjunctive support in fracture or delayed-union care.
  • Local effects: the aim is to influence symptoms or local processes, but response varies between individuals.
  • Pain and tissue sensitivity: in some conditions, it is used as an adjunct modality for symptom management.
  • Swelling: used as adjunctive support in edema care after therapist assessment.
03 /Treatment process

How the treatment works.

The therapy is non-invasive and usually painless, but suitability, dose, and contraindications are checked before treatment. Evidence of benefit differs between indications and devices.

Contraindications/Caution: not suitable for patients with pacemakers or other electronic implants; in pregnancy and serious medical conditions, medical consultation is required.

  • Setup: the patient is positioned comfortably. Since magnetic fields pass unimpeded through clothing, plaster casts, or plastic braces, removing clothes is not necessary.
  • Application: the physiotherapist positions local flat applicators beside the selected area in accordance with device instructions and the treatment plan.
  • Sensation: patients typically feel nothing during the therapy (the magnetic field is imperceptible), though a mild sensation of warmth may occur in rare cases.
  • Duration: sessions are typically longer than other modalities, often lasting between 20 and 30 minutes.
